A Strong Marriage Builds Strong Dreams

Somewhere between raising children, keeping a house running, paying bills, and getting through the week, it’s easy to forget something important.

The person you’re building a life with still has dreams of their own.

They still have things they want to accomplish, goals they want to reach, and ideas about what they want their future to look like.

And so do you.

When you’re married and raising a family, life can become so focused on what needs to be done today that you forget to make room for tomorrow. But marriage isn’t just about getting through life together. It’s about helping each other build a life you both love.

Supporting Each Other’s Dreams

Supporting your spouse doesn’t always mean making a grand gesture. Sometimes it’s listening to an idea, encouraging them to try something new, or reminding them that they’re capable of more than they realize.

Sometimes it’s believing in them on the days when they struggle to believe in themselves.

And sometimes, it’s standing beside them when things don’t work out the way they hoped.

I know how much that kind of support can mean because I’ve experienced it in my own marriage.

Honestly, my husband is a big reason I’m doing what I’m doing today.

He encouraged me to start writing. He’s the reason I took the leap and published my book. And he’s a big reason I have the courage to keep dreaming up new things, even when those dreams seem a little crazy or far-fetched.

He listens to me. He encourages me. He supports me.

And the thing that means the most to me is that he doesn’t stop supporting me if I fail.

If something doesn’t work out, he’s there to help me pick up the pieces, remind me that one failure doesn’t define me, and encourage me to try again.

He doesn’t make me feel foolish for dreaming big. He doesn’t shut me down before I’ve even had a chance to try.

He lets me dream, and he makes me feel like those dreams are worth chasing.

That kind of support is a gift, and I don’t take it for granted.

Your Dreams Matter, Too

It’s easy to become so focused on supporting everyone else that you forget to make room for yourself.

As moms, we can spend years putting our own goals on the back burner because our families need us. We love our families, and we want to give them everything we can.

But loving your family doesn’t mean you have to stop growing as a person.

You can be a devoted wife and mother and still want something for yourself. You can support your spouse’s goals while working toward your own.

And your spouse deserves that same opportunity.

Marriage shouldn’t be a competition over whose dreams matter more. There will be seasons when one person needs more support than the other. There will be sacrifices, adjustments, and plans that have to change.

That’s part of building a life together.

But neither person should have to feel guilty for wanting something more.

Be Each Other’s Safe Place

Life is hard enough without feeling like you have to defend every dream to the person you love.

Your spouse should be someone you can talk to about the things you’re excited about, the things that scare you, and the things you’re still trying to figure out.

You won’t always agree, and you won’t always understand each other’s plans. That’s okay. Supporting someone doesn’t mean you have to agree with every decision. It means you listen, communicate, and work through things together.

And when things go wrong, remember that your spouse may need encouragement more than criticism.

We all have days when we doubt ourselves. Having someone beside us who says, “I’m proud of you for trying,” can make a world of difference.

Sometimes the greatest support isn’t someone who guarantees you’ll succeed. It’s someone who reminds you that if you don’t succeed the first time, you can try again.

Keep Dreaming Together

One of the beautiful things about marriage is that you get to watch each other grow.

The dreams you had years ago may look different today. Your goals may change as your family grows and life takes unexpected turns.

That’s okay.

You’re allowed to grow, and your spouse is allowed to grow, too.

Don’t wait until life is perfect to start encouraging each other. There will always be bills to pay, chores to do, and responsibilities waiting around the corner.

Make room for the dreams anyway.

Ask your spouse what they’re working toward. Share your own hopes for the future. Celebrate the little victories, and be there for each other when things don’t go according to plan.

Because you’re not just building a household. You’re building a life together.

And that life should have room for both of you to become the people you want to be.

I’m grateful that my husband has always made room for my dreams, even the ones that seemed a little far-fetched. His belief in me has helped me take chances I might never have taken on my own.

And I hope everyone gets to experience that kind of encouragement in their marriage.

Keep cheering for each other. Keep making room for each other’s dreams. And remember that sometimes, the person who changes your life the most is the one who simply believes you can do it.
