You Can Still Have Dreams After Having Children

There’s something I wish more women were told before they became mothers:

You can still have dreams after having children.

Somewhere along the way, we started acting like motherhood meant putting every other part of ourselves away.

Your dreams. Your hobbies. Your goals. Your plans for the future.

And yes, motherhood changes things. Sometimes it changes everything.

Your time looks different. Your priorities change. Some dreams may get put on hold for a while because your children need you.

But putting something on hold isn’t the same as giving it up.

And becoming a mother doesn’t mean you stop being a woman with dreams of her own.

Maybe your dream is to stay home with your children.

Maybe it’s to work a corporate job and build a career you’re proud of.

Maybe you want to start your own business.

Maybe you want to write a book.

Maybe you want to paint, garden, travel, take up photography, learn something new, or simply have a hobby that belongs entirely to you.

Maybe you don’t even know what your dream is yet.

That’s okay too.

There isn’t one right way to dream after becoming a mom.

And there isn’t one right way to build a life.

You can want to be a stay-at-home mom and still have goals.

You can love your career and love your children just as deeply.

You can build a business from your kitchen table.

You can have hobbies that have absolutely nothing to do with your children.

You can want more.

And wanting more doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful for what you already have.

That’s the part I think moms sometimes struggle with.

We feel guilty for wanting something that’s just for us.

But wanting something for yourself doesn’t mean you want less for your children.

Your children don’t need you to disappear completely into motherhood.

They need you to be their mom, yes.

But they also get to watch you be a person.

They get to see you try.

They get to see you learn.

They get to see you fail and try again.

They get to watch you pursue something that matters to you.

And maybe someday, they’ll have a dream of their own and remember that their mom didn’t teach them to be afraid of chasing it.

I’ve learned this myself.

For a long time, I never imagined I’d call myself an author. I never imagined I’d have a blog and actually think of myself as a writer.

But here I am.

I’m still a wife.

I’m still a mom.

I’m still taking care of my home and my family.

And I’m also becoming something else.

I’m becoming the woman who finally gave herself permission to dream again.

And maybe that’s what some of us need.

Not permission from our husbands.

Not permission from our children.

Not permission from anyone else.

Permission from ourselves.

Because motherhood doesn’t have to be the end of your story.

It can be a beautiful part of it.

You can love your children with everything you have and still want something of your own.

You can be completely grateful for the life you’ve built and still dream about what comes next.

You can want it all.

And no, I don’t mean that every woman has to have a career, a business, a hobby, or some huge goal.

I mean you get to decide what “having it all” means for you.

Maybe your dream is raising your babies at home.

Maybe it’s creating something that is entirely yours.

Maybe it’s discovering a part of yourself you thought you’d lost.

Maybe it’s simply finding a little more room in your life to be you, not just Mom.

Whatever it is, don’t assume motherhood means you have to bury it.

Your children didn’t erase the woman you were before them.

And they don’t have to prevent the woman you’re still becoming.

You can still have dreams after having children.

And it’s okay to chase them.
